VinFast VF5 Facelift Previewed via Design Patent – New Design Hints at India Launch

Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast cars has filed a design patent in India showing the updated version of its VF5 electric SUV. The filing offers an early look at several exterior styling changes and strengthens speculation that the facelifted model could eventually be introduced in the Indian market.

The patent, reported on October 27, 2026, reveals revised headlights, a redesigned bonnet, updated LED taillights and new front and rear bumpers. The updated VF5 was also spotted without camouflage in Vietnam in September 2026, with visible changes matching those shown in the Indian design filing.

VinFast VF5 Facelift: What Has Changed?

The facelift brings noticeable changes to the front and rear sections of the electric SUV while retaining much of its existing side profile. The updated design appears to give the VF5 a sharper and more contemporary appearance.

1. Revised Headlights and Front Bumper

The patent images show headlights positioned lower than those on the current international-spec VF5. The surrounding black trim also appears slimmer, creating a cleaner look across the front fascia.

The bonnet has been redesigned, while the front bumper receives fresh styling. These updates give the SUV a more modern appearance without completely changing its overall identity.

The final India-spec lighting equipment and bumper design have not been confirmed.

2. Updated Rear LED Taillights

At the rear, the facelifted VF5 is expected to feature chunkier, connected LED taillights. The reverse lights and turn indicators also appear to be integrated into the updated taillight arrangement instead of being positioned separately on the bumper.

The rear tailgate features centrally positioned VinFast lettering and a VF5 badge. These details were visible on the vehicle spotted in Vietnam and correspond with the design-patent images.

3. New Wheel Design

The facelifted model has also been spotted with redesigned wheels. The Vietnamese test vehicle appears to retain 16-inch wheels, although the final wheel options for India have not been announced.

The side profile otherwise appears largely familiar, with black body cladding and a compact SUV-inspired design.

VinFast VF5 Facelift Interior: Larger Touchscreen Expected

The exterior is not the only area receiving updates. Images of the facelifted vehicle spotted in Vietnam also offer a glimpse of its revised cabin.

The dashboard appears more upright, with a larger freestanding infotainment touchscreen. The steering wheel has been redesigned with a two-spoke layout and flattened upper and lower sections.

One notable change is the apparent absence of a separate traditional driver's instrument display. The larger central touchscreen may also display driving information, although the final production layout and functionality require confirmation.

The centre console features a rotary drive selector and two cupholders. The cabin seen in the test vehicle has black upholstery, while the seats appear to use leatherette material instead of the fabric upholstery found in the existing Vietnam-spec model.

These interior details are based on overseas sightings. VinFast has not confirmed which features will be offered on an India-spec version.

VinFast could revise the battery, motor or charging system for the updated model, but there is no official confirmation of such changes at present.

VinFast VF5 India Launch: What We Know

The Indian design-patent filing is an important development because the VF5 has previously been reported testing on Indian roads. Together, the sightings and patent suggest that VinFast is evaluating the model for the Indian market.

However, the company has not confirmed whether the updated VF5 will be launched in India or when it might arrive.

Reports have suggested a possible 2027 launch, but this remains an expectation rather than an official timeline. The manufacturer has also not announced bookings, deliveries or the India-specific variant lineup.

If introduced, the VF5 could sit below the VF6 in VinFast's Indian passenger vehicle portfolio and help the company target a larger group of electric-car buyers.

Expected Price of the VinFast VF5 Facelift in India

The India-spec VF5 is expected to be positioned in the more affordable electric SUV segment. Recent reports have suggested a price of around ₹12 lakh, ex-showroom, but VinFast has not confirmed this figure.

The final price will depend on several factors, including battery capacity, standard equipment, localisation and the variants offered.

If the company can achieve competitive pricing through local manufacturing and component sourcing, the VF5 could become an alternative for buyers considering compact electric SUVs from established Indian manufacturers.

The expected price should not be treated as an official estimate from VinFast, and the final showroom price could differ considerably.

VinFast VF5 Facelift: Expected Rivals in India

If launched with suitable dimensions and pricing, the updated VF5 could compete with electric vehicles such as the Tata Punch.ev and Tata Nexon.ev, as well as the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV.

Its precise positioning will depend on the final battery pack, driving range, equipment and price. A lower-priced configuration could target buyers moving from petrol-powered hatchbacks or compact SUVs to electric mobility, while a higher-spec version could compete with more expensive compact EVs.

For VinFast, the challenge will be to offer competitive range, reliable charging support, convenient ownership services and a strong after-sales network alongside attractive pricing.

What the Design Patent Means for Indian Buyers

A design patent protects a vehicle's visual design in the relevant market. It does not necessarily mean the manufacturer has committed to launching that exact vehicle locally.

In the VF5's case, the filing is particularly interesting because the updated model has also been seen in Vietnam and an earlier VF5 test vehicle has been reported in India.

The matching design details suggest that VinFast may be considering the updated styling for a future Indian offering. Nevertheless, buyers should wait for a formal announcement before treating the facelift, its features or its launch timeline as confirmed.

Conclusion

The VinFast VF5 facelift has been previewed through an Indian design-patent filing, revealing revised headlights, a new bonnet, redesigned LED taillights and fresh bumpers. Overseas sightings also indicate changes to the dashboard, touchscreen and steering wheel.

The updated electric SUV could help VinFast expand into India's more accessible EV segment if the company confirms a local launch. However, the India-spec battery, range, features, price and launch date remain unannounced.

For now, the patent provides a useful preview of the VF5's design direction, but it should not be interpreted as confirmation that the facelifted electric SUV will reach Indian showrooms.
